Google Search now supports Myanmar (Burmese) language
While our users have always been able to search Google using the Burmese script, today Google’s interface will be presented in Myanmar (Burmese) by default to users in Myanmar on a new homepage www.google.com.mm
There are more than 40 million Myanmar (Burmese) speakers and yet Internet penetration in Myanmar is less than 1%. It is our hope that by supporting this language, we can help the people of Myanmar and Myanmar (Burmese) speakers come online, access useful information and create content that can be shared with the world.
Google has adopted the Unicode-compliant Myanmar 3 Font (MM3), an international standard, which also supports the other languages of Myanmar; Mon, Karen, Kayah, Pali, Rumai Palaung and Shan. For those without a Unicode-compatible keyboard, we’ve included a new virtual keyboard in the search box itself.
Special thanks to The Asia Foundation, Digital Democracy, Information Matrix and most of all, the volunteers who dedicated their time, energy and expertise to making this launch possible. Google offers a warm welcome to those accessing the Internet for the first time in Myanmar.
